1. When should I schedule my first pregnancy visit?
You should schedule your first antenatal visit as soon as your
pregnancy test is positive, ideally between 6-8 weeks of pregnancy. Early antenatal care helps
confirm the pregnancy, estimate your due date, assess your health and plan the care that you
and your baby will need throughout the pregnancy.
2. Is nausea and vomiting normal during pregnancy?
Yes. Nausea and vomiting are common during early pregnancy. They begin around 7-8 weeks and improve after 16-18 weeks. Staying hydrated and eating small frequent meals may help. If vomiting is severe and you are unable to keep food or fluids down, consult your doctor promptly as it may require medical attention.
3. Can I exercise and travel during pregnancy?
In most uncomplicated pregnancies, regular physical activity and
travel are safe with your obstetrician’s guidance. Activities such as walking, prenatal yoga
and swimming are commonly recommended. Your doctor will advise you based on your medical
history, stage of pregnancy and any pregnancy-related concerns.
4. Which warning signs should I look out for during pregnancy?
If you experience severe abdominal pain, heavy vaginal bleeding,
leakage of fluid, persistent severe headache, blurred vision, reduced fetal movements, fever
or sudden swelling of the face or hands seek immediate medical attention. Prompt evaluation
can help protect the health of both mother and baby.
5. What is Down Syndrome and why should it be screened during
pregnancy?
It is a genetic condition which can affect the child’s physical
development, learning abilities and may be associated with certain medical conditions such as
congenital heart defects or thyroid disorders. Screening during pregnancy helps us estimate
the likelihood that the baby has Down Syndrome. Incase the screening shows a high risk for the
Syndrome, there are further evaluation tests. Early identification allows parents to make
informed decisions, prepare for the baby’s healthcare needs and plan appropriate medical care
and support before and after birth.
